Welcome and Introduction
Welcome to the Patient Advocacy Workshop Group at Petronille Healthy Society. Our workshop group is a dedicated initiative designed to empower patients, caregivers, and community members with the knowledge, skills, and confidence to advocate effectively for their healthcare needs. Through interactive workshops, training sessions, and community outreach, we are building a movement of informed advocates who can navigate complex healthcare systems, influence policy, and ensure that patient voices are heard at every level of decision-making.

Since our inception, the Patient Advocacy Workshop Group has trained hundreds of individuals across diverse communities, equipping them with practical tools to communicate with providers, access resources, and champion health equity. Our mission is to transform personal health challenges into collective advocacy power, creating lasting change for patients and families everywhere.

Workshop Impact
Our Impact in Numbers

The impact of our Patient Advocacy Workshop Group speaks through the lives we have touched and the communities we have strengthened. To date, we have conducted over 8 workshops reaching more than 100 participants across Maryland and beyond. Our advocacy training has helped patients secure better access to treatments, reduce medical billing errors, and improve communication with their care teams.

Through our workshops, 85% of participants report feeling more confident in discussing treatment options with their doctors, and 70% have successfully navigated insurance appeals or access barriers after completing our programs. These numbers represent real people who now have the tools to stand up for their health and the health of their loved ones.

Workshop Programs and Curriculum

Our comprehensive workshop curriculum covers essential topics including understanding patient rights, effective communication with healthcare providers, navigating insurance and billing, clinical trial participation, and health policy advocacy. Each session is designed to be interactive, culturally sensitive, and accessible to participants from all backgrounds and education levels.

We offer specialized tracks for rare disease patients, chronic illness caregivers, pediatric advocacy, and senior health navigation. Our trained facilitators include healthcare professionals, experienced patient advocates, and legal experts who bring real-world expertise to every session. Participants leave with actionable resources, personalized advocacy plans, and ongoing support from our advocacy network.

Patient Stories
Patient and Caregiver Success Stories

One of the most powerful measures of our impact is found in the stories of those who have attended our workshops. Maria, a mother of two children with rare conditions, used the skills she learned to successfully advocate for specialized care at a top research hospital, cutting her wait time from six months to two weeks. James, a senior living with diabetes, learned to dispute incorrect insurance charges and saved over $4,000 in out-of-pocket costs.

These stories are not exceptions—they are the standard outcome of empowered advocacy. Our workshop participants regularly go on to form their own support groups, speak at public hearings, and mentor new advocates in their communities. Their courage and determination inspire our continued commitment to expanding this vital program.

Community Outreach and Partnerships

The Patient Advocacy Workshop Group extends far beyond our classroom walls. We partner with community centers, faith-based organizations, hospitals, and patient support groups to bring advocacy training directly to underserved populations. Our mobile workshop initiative has reached rural communities, immigrant populations, and areas with limited healthcare access, ensuring that everyone has the opportunity to become their own best advocate.

Through collaborations with local health departments, legal aid societies, and medical institutions, we have created a robust referral network that connects workshop graduates with ongoing support services. These partnerships multiply our impact, creating a sustainable ecosystem of patient-centered care and community-driven health advocacy.

Policy Forum
Advocacy Training and Policy Engagement

We believe that effective patient advocacy must extend to the policy level. Our advanced workshop track trains participants to engage with legislators, participate in public comment periods, and contribute to health policy discussions at the local and state levels. Graduates of our policy program have testified before the Maryland General Assembly, contributed to patient advisory boards, and influenced regulations affecting medication access and healthcare transparency.

By bridging the gap between personal experience and systemic change, the Patient Advocacy Workshop Group is cultivating a new generation of citizen advocates who understand that their stories have power and their voices deserve a seat at the table. Together, we are shaping a healthcare system that truly puts patients first.
